Głogów is a large town of the Lower Silesian province, situated close to the border with Lubush province. If you enter it from the north, down the road no 12, the castle will be noticeable just beyond the big bridge over Oder (Tolerancji Bridge which in 2006 was in a controversial, heather color).
Historical outline:
Former name: Glogau
Głogów initially possessed a defensive borough on the island called Ostrów Tumski, which in 1109 resisted to Caesarean armies. However in 1249 an independent duchy of Głogów was formed, what entailed the need for constructing a new seat. On initiative of duke Konrad II the brick castle was erected in the second half of the XIIIth cent., which was enlarged in 1344. In the XIVth and XVth cent. the stronghold was the seat of the royal clerk, and in 1480 was rebuilt again after the fire. The consecutive centuries brought next reconstructions of the castle, while in 1945 the monument was severely demolished. The rebuilding lasting till the end of the 60s of the XXth cent. saved the stronghold.
