Historical outline:There exist a few theories concerning the beginnings of the castle in Lublin. One of them assumes that the castle hill was reinforced already in the VIIIth cent. The other one mentions early-medieval borough, which in the Xth cent. was shifted to the place called Grodzisko, and subsequently in the XIth cent. again to the castle hill. Researchers agree only on the fact that an initial foundation was wooden-earth, whereas the first brick element of the castle was the tower, which has survived until today. Unfortunately, on the subject of date of its origin there is no concord among historians. Then at the end of the XIIIth cent. or at the beginning of the XIVth cent., came into being the next tower, which was later converted into St. Trinity chapel.
The main extension of the castle took place in the XVIth cent., but already in the XVIIth cent., a half of the castle was destroyed by the Swedes. Times of castle’s splendor elapsed at the start of the XVIIIth cent., whereas in the XIXth cent. in the place of a dismantled castle was raised a prison building, which encompassed a tower and a chapel. Separation of all 3 buildings ensued again in 1954, when the former jail was converted into a museum.
