Niedzica - Dunajec Castle

State of preservation:		The castle has preserved as a whole
Admission:		The entrance to the castle is paid and possible in hours from 9:00 to 19:00. The last entry at 18:30.
Parking:		The parking lot by the castle is paid. Beside it, you cannot practically park your car legally.
Searching difficulty:		The stronghold is visible from a distance, and moreover, the signpost lead up to it
Access difficulty:		You go down the walking avenue from the parking lot

Driving directions:

Driving down the road no 969 from Krościenko on Dunajec towards Nowy Targ, after covering around 6 km you need to turn left towards Niedzica and border crossing. After reaching Dunajec you ought to turn right towards Niedzica. After a moment the castle will be visible from a distance on the hill.


Historical outline:

The Dunajec Castle was very thoroughly explored by numerous teams of explorers. Thanks to their works we know very much about the stronghold.
The castle came into being most probably at the end of the XIIIth cent., however, the first reference to the castle appears in the documents written in 1325, when the stronghold still lied on the territory of Hungary, and its the then owners were brothers Rykolf and Kokosz the Berzeviczowies. Then the castle for a short time came into Wilhelm Drugeth's hands, who extended the castle, and in 1347 the stronghold came back under the Berzeviczowie family from Łomnica's guardianship and was in their possession till the 60s of the XVth cent. The next owners of the castle were the Zapolyowies, the Łaskis, the Horwathowies (who extended the castle and gave it the shape approximate to the present), Italian family of Joanelli and at the end of the XVIIIth cent. a neglected returned again to former owners. The last owners of Niedzica was the Salamon family till 1944. After the war the castle was renovated and turned into the museum.
