Historical outline:Former name: Oppeln
In the past two castles existed in Opole: one was situated on Ostrówek island, and the second on so-called Górka.
Newer of them – the castle on Górka is little known and poorly researched. It was put up in the XIVth cent. in a line of town walls by Krawiecka and Muzealna St. probably on the initiative of Władysław II Opolczyk. In 1615 the castle was destroyed by fire and has never been reconstructed. Its tower served as a granary, one of chambers as a shrine of Protestants, and in the bailey potters built their houses. In the XVIIth cent. the territory was passed over to Jesuits, who in 1668 raised a church in the place of the castle, out of which only a quadrilateral tower was left behind, to which the building of the former junior high school on Górka were annexed in the years of 1898-1939.
