Jelenia Góra-Sobieszów - Chojnik Castle

Driving directions:

From Jelenia Góra you ought to drive towards Szklarska Poręba. After leaving the town turn left towards Kowary (the road no 366). Then you need to drive down the main road all the way to the parking lot of the castle, from where the signposts lead to the castle. Up the hill you can follow the red or black trail. The black trail is usually more difficult (to overcome, among others, rock-climbing), but this is a considerably prettier route. The red track leads up through comparatively smooth path, however the scenery is far less interesting. The most favorable route is climbing up the hill following the black trail and descending following the red trail.




Historical outline:

The former name: Hermsdorf, Kynast Castle

The upper castle was founded by the Piasts of Świdnica-Jawor, probably yet at the end of the XIIIth cent. In the years of 1393-1634 the stronghold belonged to the Schaffgotschs, one of the most powerful Silesian families. These were them who at the end of the XVth cent. or in the XVIth cent. annexed the outer court (the lower castle) with the defensive towers. In 1675 the castle went down in flames and since then it was being gradually on the decline. Nowadays there is a hostel situated next to the castle.
