Historical outline:Former name: Liegnitz
Legnica was one of the most important Silesian centers already in the XIIth cent. There existed the castellan borough the then, in the place of which the brick castle was raised. It sprang into existence probably in the beginning of the XIIIth cent. on the initiative of the duke Henryk Brodaty or his father Bolesław Wysoki. Starting since 1248 the castle was the main manor of the dukes of Legnica-Brzesko. Similarly like in the case of almost all the castles, also that one in Legnica was repeatedly rebuilt. The first construction works took place in the XVth cent. The following ones were made in the XVIth cent. Next in the XVIIth cent. the Clock Tower (1621) and Lubińska Gate (1660) came into being. The fires from 1711 and 1835 destroyed the castle which was, however, precisely rebuilt and the seats of offices were placed there. In 1945 the building burnt down again but was reconstructed one more time. St. Piotr and St. Jadwiga towers as well as one, rebuilt wing of the castle have survived of the XIIIth-century castle up to this day.
