Historical outline:The former name: Ottmachau
The bishop castle in Otmuchów came into being in the second half of the XIIIth cent., probably in the place of the bishop castle. It was destroyed very quickly by the duke Henry IV Probus, who had an argument with the bishop Tomasz II. After appeasing the dispute, the castle was rebuilt in 1295. In the years of 1341-1376 the bishop Przecław from Pogorzela commissioned construction works, the result of which was arising a fully fortified castle. Thanks to it the stronghold was not seized in Hussite wars' time. In the subsequent centuries the castle was being repeatedly rebuilt and was being given the style characteristic of the particular period.
The castle felt the effect of the Thirty Years' War, in 1646 was taken by the Swedes, and in 1741 was destroyed by the Prussians. Since 1347 to 1810 the stronghold was remaining in the bishops of Wrocław' hands. After the secularization of the ecclesiastical goods the castle was passed to the Hohenzollern family, the member of which, Wilhelm von Humboldt, received it in 1820. Eight years later two wings of the castle were disassembled, and in the middle of the XIXth cent. Wilhelm's brother, Alexander, formed the garden at the foot of the castle. The stronghold survived the World War II unharmed and since 1966 it housed the summer resort for some time. Currently in the castle there is situated the hotel.
