Driving down the road no 534 from Grudziądz you need to enter Radzyń Chełmiński and follow the main road towards Wąbrzeźno. The castle stands by the road, on the left side.


Historical outline:

The former name: Rheden

The brick Teutonic castle in Radzyń arose in the place of a wooden-earth defensive building from 1234. Historians, however, are not unanimous as it comes to the date of building the castle. The earliest mentioned date of the beginning of building are the 90s of the XIIIth cent., while the latest of mentioned dates of the completion of building falls on 1340. It may be thus acknowledged that the castle arose at the turn of the XIIIth and XIVth cent. Whereas certain is the thing that since 1251 Radzyń was the seat of commandery, and in 1285 its civic rights were revived, what indicates that it possessed them already before.
As early as 1466 until 1772 the stronghold was being under Poland's rule and it housed the starosty. The Swedish Invasion in 1628 led to the destruction of the castle, which was, however, in the use through the next century. In 1780 the Prussian authorities ordered the disassembly of the castle. Its consequence was depriving the stronghold of three wings and the destruction of the fourth, which has remained up to this day thanks to the preservative works from 1838 and the XXth cent.
