Szymbark (Warmian-Masurian Province)

State of preservation:		The castle has preserved in the form of a huge ruin
Admission:		The castle is a private property, therefore you cannot enter it. However, there are times that the watchman is there (nice, older man), who willingly shows around the castle.
Parking:		By the castle there is no parking lot
Searching difficulty:		Finding the place itself is difficult, and in addition the castle there is hidden
Access difficulty:		The access to the ruins is very easy, and goes through flat paths
Subjective rating:		Beautiful ruins

Driving directions:

Driving down the road no 521 from Iława to Kwidzyń after covering 9 km you need to turn left (it is in practice the first asphalt road on the left). However, you should be very careful, because there is no signpost indicating any place. After a while you arrive in Szymbark, where just past the board with the name of the place you need to turn into the second asphalt street on the left (the first leads up to the estate). Then you ought to drive ahead all the way long and at the end of the road turn right. Then the castle will be visible opposite.

The former name: Schönberg

The building of the castle in Szymbark was begun in the years of 1378-1386 by the pomeranian chapter. After the secularization of the Prussia in 1525 the stronghold was often changing hands. One of them, Teofil von Polentz or his son Albrecht, extended the castle in the years of 1570-1590. The consecutive conversion took place in the years of 1717-1730 in Albrecht Krzysztof Finck von Finckenstein's time as well as in the years of 1857-1858 on Karol Ludwik Finck von Finckenstein's initiative. In the years of 1904-1934 the conservation of the castle and its partial modernization was performed. In 1945 soviet army destroyed the stronghold turning it into the ruin. After the World War II the castle was for a moment the property of the foundation 'Widzieć Muzyką', and since 1997 it has been in the private hands.
