Subsequently, drive straight ahead all the way long till you reach the T-shaped junction with the traffic lights, where you need to turn left into the road no 46 towards Opole. After traveling 300-400m there is a bus stop on the right side (beyond the pharmacy), and opposite to it, on the left side there is Grunwaldzka Street, into which you have to drive. After covering next 200m there is a hospital on the left side, on the premises of which there is a sought building.
Historical outline:A preserved construction up to this day is a repeatedly rebuilt part of the XIIIth-century castle erected by dukes of Opole. In the XIVth cent. it came for a moment into hands of the Polish nobleman – Spytko from Melsztyn. However, already in the beginning of the XVth cent. the castle returned into reign of dukes of Upper Silesia, when one of them, got married with Spytko’s daughter – Jadwiga, who brought in the castle as a dowry.
In the years of 1532-1587 the castle was in the hands of Czech kings who often gagged the castle to different people. In 1587 the castle became the ownership of Kochcicki family, but already in 1629 along with surrounding villages it was confiscated by an emperor as a penalty for participation in the Thirty Years’ War in the Protestant camp. This house made the most thorough conversion of the castle.
In the years of 1645-1727 a strongly transformed castle was in the possession of an Italian family of Cellari, who were striving for nobility, and for this purpose an indispensible to them was, among others, a proper estate. Under Cellari family ‘s rule the following conversion of the castle was carried out, and it is also supposed that in 1655 in the time of the Swedish Deluge in the castle for a little while stayed a painting of Our Lady of Częstochowa during its transport to Głogówek in the Opole Silesia, where sojourned the king Jan Kazimierz then.
In the years of 1727-1763 the castle was the property of the Garnier line, later it changed the owners frequently until 1784 when it came into hands of Franz Grotowski, who dying childless assigned the castle in his last will for an orphanage. However, Prussian authorities did not give their assent to it and not earlier than 1843 they ordered to put up a new building with the purpose of educational institution. Whereas the castle in the years of 1849-1879 fulfilled the role of a district court, and next till 1892 – a circuit court. Through the all time, however, it remained the private property.
In 1892 the castle was bought out by Opole District Office and mental hospital was established in there, the function of which it fulfilled until 1975, when it was abandoned since the building not redecorated threatened to collapse. At present the castle was reconstructed and it houses the hotel.
