Historical outline:
Former name: Freystadt
The castle in Kożuchów sprang into existence the most probably in the second half of the XIVth cent. in the place of the XIIIth cent. borough. Kożuchów is a very old town, which obtained its rights already in 1273. In the time of reign of Bohemians in this territory, the stronghold was leased and next it became a fief of Polish kings. Over the following two centuries the castle, in spite of its enlargement, began decaying. In the 80s of the XVIIth cent. an abandoned edifice was taken over by White Friars and metamorphosed into a cloister. After abrogation of the Order the castle served functions of a military armory so as to come into hands of Evangelical community. It was not until the years of 1974-1984 when restorations of the castle were performed and it was assigned for cultural purposes.
